August 21, 1988 - EL HOYO, also known as the Hole, An illegal Social Club located at Jerome Ave and 172nd Street in the Bronx. It was a Sunday morning when Bronx Box 2935 was transmitted for a fire in a social club with numerous people trapped. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was pushing out of a taxpayer on Jerome ave. A second alarm was transmitted. people at the scene were reporting numerous people trapped in the basemant which was being used as a social club. Firefighters making entry were met with people trying to escape the fire. Numerous rescues were being made. Firefighters also breached the walls and basement of the store next door to get to others that were trapped in the basement. The fire spread into the cockloft of the building and with numerous rescues being made, third and fourth alarms were quickly transmitted. I responded from my Home in Queens. It was a Sunday morning and traffic was light. I arrived at the scene in about 20 minutes. As i approached the scene, numerous victims were being brought out by firefighters. Firefighters and EMS personnel were administering CPR to numerous victims on the street in front of the fire building. Numerous people were rescued by firefighters. 6 people died from their injuries from burns and smoke inhalation and about 30 people were taken to hospitals in various conditions. The fire was started by a tipped over candle. The Fifth Alarm was called for relief purposes.
